WESTMINSTER -- Henry Blue of the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club earned his third trip to the U.S. Amateur golf championship with a 1-under-par total of 71-72143 in sectional qualifying at Wakefield Valley Golf Club yesterday.

Blue, 36, whose previous championship starts had been in 1981 and 1988, was joined by three players who were successful for the first time, and all four cited hitting greens in regulation and solid putting as keys. Jerry Wood, of Richmond, Va., 23, and a recent Virginia Commonwealth graduate, shot 72-70142 for the medal, and explained that he entered here rather than at home so he would be an unknown and not have added pressure to do well.

Jim Cangiano, 19, former Washington Junior Golfer of the Year and now a Duke sophomore, who plays from Holly Hills CC, and Mike Wah, 21, an Indiana University of Pennsylvania junior who works in the Wakefield Valley golf shop, completed the qualifiers from 83 entries.
