Braun joins Broadneck as boys soccer coach

August 11, 1992

Broadneck High School athletic director Ken Kazmarek announced yesterday the hiring of Jonathan Braun as head coach of the boys soccer team.

Braun, a former head coach at Southern High in Harwood, will replace Kevin McMullen, who resigned last month to take a teaching/coaching position at Thomas Johnson Middle/High School in Frederick County.

McMullen, the only boys soccer coach Broadneck has had since opening in 1982, coached the Bruins to a 91-35-10 record in his tenure, reaching the state Class 4A finals in 1990.

"Kevin left a tremendous void for us to fill here at Broadneck and I feel that by bringing Jon on, we are filling that void as closely as we can," Kazmarek said.

"Jon represents a lot of things that Kevin did as a coach, and he has a similar coaching style and philosophy," Kazmarek said.

Braun, a Cape St. Claire resident, is no stranger to Broadneck soccer. Before coaching Severna Park's junior varsity boys team and at Southern, the 38-year-old served as McMullen's first assistant coach.

"I'm very excited about this," said Braun, a physical education teacher at Edgewater Elementary School. "It's my first opportunity as a head coach on the 4A level, and I'm looking forward to it. When I was at Southern [from 1984-1992] we played everyone, but we were always the small school playing against the big school. Now I'll have a chance to play these schools on an equal level.

"I feel fortunate to have worked with Kevin before. He ran an outstanding program at Broadneck, and I learned a lot from him. I'll try to continue things along the same line."
