Three seeking City Council seats

Three candidates have filed for election to the Ocean City Council. Incumbent Jim Hall and former councilmen George Feehley and Lee Duggan have become candidates. There are four seats open on the seven-seat City Council this year, in addition to the mayor's seat.

Mayor Roland "Fish" Powell hasn't announced if he will seek re-election. Council members serve four years and the mayor serves a two-year term. Elections are held every two years. This year's election will be Oct. 20. Candidates have until Sept. 22 to file.

Board rejects developer's request

The Worcester County Commissioners have refused a request to rezone property in Ocean Pines, a move that would have allowed a developer to put large anchor stores in a planned outlet mall. The developer, Gene Parker of Ocean City, asked that the zone be changed from B-1 to B-2, both business designations, so larger stores could be built.

At a public hearing several weeks ago, many Ocean Pines residents objected to the change, saying they don't want to see the quiet residential area become crowded with traffic. Mr. Parker said he will still build an outlet mall in The Pines, along Route 589, but that the stores will be smaller.

Trial postponed in murder case

A trial for William Warren, the 32-year-old Berlin man accused of murdering his mother-in-law, will probably be rescheduled for December. The trial was supposed to begin July 20, but was postponed after Warren suffered what family members called a nervous breakdown.

Maryland State Police in Berlin said only that Mr. Warren was found to be unable to stand trial in July. His mother-in-law, Mildred Louise Williams, 56, was reported missing last July. In December, her body was discovered buried under a shed on her farm in Libertytown, near Berlin.
