Gerard Kessler Sr. Asst. attorney general

Gerard H. Kessler Sr., an assistant attorney general for Maryland for 22 years, died of cancer Tuesday at the Manor Care Nursing Home in Ruxton.

A memorial Mass for Mr. Kessler, who was 61, will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Roman Catholic Immaculate Conception Church, 200 Ware Ave., Towson.

Born in Perth Amboy, N.J., Mr. Kessler graduated from Loyola College in Baltimore in 1952 and from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1955. Mr. Kessler then went to work as an attorney at the Baltimore law firm of Callahan and Caldwell.

In 1966, he was appointed an assistant attorney general, retiring 22 years later. Mr. Kessler also had served as chairman of the credit committee for the State Employees Credit Union of Maryland.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Therese Baur Kessler; five sons, Kevin J. Kessler of Reisterstown, James F. Kessler of Abingdon, Kurt T. Kessler of Towson, John M. Kessler of Annapolis and Keith B. Kessler of Owings Mills; a brother, S. William Kessler of San Mateo, Calif.; a sister, Mary Rose Collins of Jacksonville, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

The family suggested memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 43025, Baltimore 21236-0025.
