Westminster High athletic director quits

WESTMINSTER -- Westminster High's Jeff Oeming will step down from his position as the school's athletic director to further concentrate on his positions as head football coach and social studies teacher.

Oeming, who could not be reached for comment, will step down as soon as a new AD is hired to replace him, said Sherri-Le W. Bream, the school's principal.

Oeming replaced Jim Head as the school's athletic director in 1989 and will enter his fifth season this fall as the Owls' head football coach after coaching at North Carroll in 1986 and 1987.

"He came to me about it a week or two ago," said Bream. "It was a personal choice and just a matter of both positions being extremely time-consuming.

"The AD position consumes a great deal of time and being a football coach consumes a great deal of time and it just became an overwhelming situation. I think it was a good move for him."

North Carroll's Ed Powelson is the only athletic director in the county's five public schools who also coaches a varsity team. Powelson has been the athletic director and soccer coach at North Carroll for more than 30 years.

"I've been doing it for 30-some years and just grew with it as the years went on," Powelson said.

"With Jeff, it was a little different because he came into it new -- starting as a football coach and then adding it [the AD position]."

Meanwhile, the search for a new AD at Westminster continues and Bream said the school is in good shape for the upcoming fall sports season.

"We're trying to get someone on board before the start of school this fall," Bream said. "He [Oeming] will still function as AD until we find someone and he already has the fall schedule prepared."

Oeming is a Michigan native who graduated from Elmhurst (Ill.) College with a double major in psychology and physical education before moving to Carroll County in 1985.

His first job in Carroll was as an assistant wrestling coach at Liberty High. North Carroll's football team was 10-10 under Oeming in his two seasons in the mid-1980s. In his four years at Westminster, he's compiled a 18-22 record -- including last year's 1-9 season. The prior year, 1990, he guided the Owls to a 7-3 mark.
