SOLOMONS -- New this year as a feeder between the Yachting Governor's Cup Race from Annapolis to St. Mary's City and Yachting Race Days at Solomons is the Yachting Link, a 25-mile race between the two Southern Maryland venues, which took place in pleasant 8-knot breezes yesterday.
"It was very light wind when we started," said Bill Steitz, whose team on his Concordia 47 Dancer was first to finish the race. "We drifted around down the Potomac and turned left, got in and picked up some wind and pulled ahead, which felt pretty good."
Although 46 boats were registered in the Link, only 30 started the event in the wake of widespread boat, equipment and sail damage from a severe thunderstorm Friday evening. It tore through the Governor's Cup fleet as it prepared to start that 70-mile race off Annapolis.
