Track and field: Britain's Linford Christie, long overshadowed by U.S. superstars, won the men's 100 meters. America's Gail Devers, whose feet were nearly amputated last year, leaned over the tape to narrowly win the women's 100. In the women's marathon, Valentina Yegorova of the Unified Team broke away from Japan's Yuko Arimori just outside the stadium to win the gold.

Basketball: When the U.S. women ran up against China's Zheng Haixia of China, all 6 feet 8, 273 pounds of her, they ran her into exhaustion, breaking open a close game to win, 93-67, for their second Olympic victory.

Gymnastics: Kim Zmeskal had every chance to win an Olympic gold medal, but she fell again, this time in the vault, and she goes home with just one medal, a team bronze. Shannon Miller, (( all-around silver medalist, added a silver in the balance beam and a bronze in the uneven parallel bars and a bronze in the floor exercise.
