Swimming: Summer Sanders put on her "mean face" and swam to a gold medal in the 200 butterfly. Matt Biondi tied Mark Spitz with an 11th gold medal, although he won it standing on the side of the pool. And Ron Karnaugh finished sixth in the men's 200 individual medley relay and then talked through tears of his father, who died during the opening ceremonies.

Gymnastics: Vitaly Scherbo, the men's all-around gold medalist who led a Unified Team sweep, likes discos and fast cars. The last of a great line produced by the Soviet sports machine, he will take his act on the road to earn a living.

Baseball: The U.S. team ran itself into the medal-round playoffs. The United States stole 10 bases to make up for another day of sputtering offense and undependable pitching, beating Puerto Rico, 8-2.

Volleyball: The United States outlasted the Unified Team over five games to post its first victory at the Olympics and likely gained a place in the next round. After losing a five-game opener to Japan, the United States is 1-1 and still must play Spain, the lowest ranked of the eight teams in the tournament. The Unified Team is also 1-1.
