Swimming: Anita Nall of Towson swam for the circuit, winning a relay gold. Janet Evans and wild child Melvin Stewart, once caught cavorting naked through a girls prep school dorm, also won gold.

Gymnastics: Kim Zmeskal was so hyped by the expectations of others that all that was left for her to do was fail. And she did, finishing 10th after a costly mistake on her very first routine. Shannon Miller won the all-around silver, edged out by Tatiana Gutsu of the Unified Team by 12 thousandths of a point. Her coach said she was robbed.

Basketball: The Dream Girls, unbeaten in 13 straight Olympic games, crushed Czechoslovakia, 111-55. "We want to send a message to the rest of the world," Clarissa Davis said.

Boxing: Oscar de la Hoya threw his arms up and looked on high after winning his opening fight at the Olympics. He was looking for his mother, Cecilia, who died of breast cancer two years ago. He had dedicated the gold medal he hopes to win to her.
