Each year children start more than 28,000 residential fires, and more than 300 people -- most of them children -- die in those fires. It's a staggering statistic and one reason lighter manufacturers are trying to come up with child-proof lighters.
Jockeying to get into drugstores and supermarkets first are the Bic Lighter with Child Guard and Cricket Electronic. Cricket's lighter will sell for about $1, while Bic's new lighter will debut at about $1.15 or $1.20.
Both manufacturers stress that no lighter should be left within the reach of a child.
