Yesterday

Gymnastics: Kim Zmeskal had to be perfect and she very nearly was. A string of 9.9's boosted her into the all-around competition and her teammates to a bronze medal. But in the process, she bumped Silver Spring's Dominique Dawes.

Swimming: The world caught up with the 1988 Olympic heroes as Janet Evans' amazing six-year winning streak in the 400 freestyle ended -- she wept as she accepted the silver medal -- and Matt Biondi's finished a shocking fifth in the 100 freestyle. Meanwhile, the U.S. women set a world record in the 400-meter (( freestyle relay.

Volleyball: Those zany guys on the U.S. volleyball team shaved their heads in a show of solidarity with the shiny-headed teammate whose bad temper cost them their victory over Japan. Then they went out and buzzed Canada, 3 games to 2.
