Barkley fires from the mouth, and teammates run for cover BARCELONA '92

July 26, 1992|By Ken Rosenthal

BARCELONA SPAIN — BARCELONA, Spain -- Charles Barkley was at it again yesterday during a Dream Team news conference, and as he fired one salvo after another, several of his teammates covered their heads with their hands.

The best of Barkley:

* On the Olympics competition: "Croatia's going to be there. Lithuania, Germany, Spain, Brazil. . . . They're going to give us a good game -- for a half."

* On foreign criticism of NBA stars competing in the Games: "Why is it such a big deal when we use pro athletes when they've been using pros all these years? Why don't they just take their whipping like people and go home?"

* On the U.S. defeat in 1972: "I had just flunked my entrance exam into kindergarten, so I really don't know about that. But I'll tell you what, I think it was a travesty.

"None of the guys would admit it, but '72 and '88, we remember that stuff when we're playing. None of the foreign guys will say it, but they don't like Americans. We're made out to be the glamour country.

"We're going to get it done. There's a little bit of revenge."

Toward the end of the news conference, a reporter asked U.S. coach Chuck Daly if he ever tried to restrain Barkley.

K? "Frankly," Daly said, "I don't think it would do any good."
