Commissioner's Office -- Announced that George Steinbrenner, New York Yankees principal owner, can reassume the position of managing general partner of the team on March 1, 1993.

Orioles -- Placed IF Tim Hulett on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Tuesday. Purchased the contract of IF Tommy Shields from Triple-A Rochester.

Florida Marlins -- Signed C James Henry Smith and IF Anthony Sylvestri.

Houston Astros -- Announced that an agreement in principle has been reached to sell the club to Drayton McLane Jr.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Sent P Bruce Ruffin on a temporary assignment to Triple-A Denver. Purchased the contract of Denver OF Alex Diaz (38 steals).

Montreal Expos -- Placed SS Spike Owen on the 15-day DL, retroactive to July 20. Purchased the contract of SS Wil Cordero from Triple-A Indianapolis, for which he was hitting .314 with 6 HRs.

Oakland Athletics -- Activated P Dave Stewart from the 15-day DL. Placed P Goose Gossage on the 15-day DL, retroactive to July 19.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Activated 1B-OF Jim Lindeman from the 60-day DL. Sent OF Ruben Amaro to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Moved OF Tony Longmire from the 15-day to the 60-day DL.

Minnesota Timberwolves -- Promoted Chuck Davisson to assistant coach and Jim Brewer to assistant GM.

New England Patriots -- Signed LB Johnny Rembert, DT Jim Gray and C Steve Gordon.
