HAGERSTOWN -- Paul Carey hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning last night, giving the Hagerstown Suns a 5-4 victory over the Canton-Akron Indians in a Double-A Eastern League game.
Sam Ferretti walked to lead off the ninth for the Suns (55-56), and Cesar Devarez followed with a pop out. Canton-Akron (57-44) summoned reliever Bill Wertz to face the left-handed Carey, who homered after working the count to 2-2.
Winner John Pawlowski (1-1), who started the season with Edmonton (California Angels), pitched three innings, giving up three hits and one run and striking out one.
The loss dropped Wertz to 7-3, each defeat coming against Hagerstown.
