* Deer hunting permit applications for hunts this fall on Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge south of Rock Hall are now available from the refuge manager's office. Permits will be issued after a public drawing at the refuge at 1 p.m., Sept. 8. Season dates are: Archery, Sept. 21, 25, 28; disabled hunters, Oct. 5; muzzleloaders, Oct. 9, 16, 19; shotgun, Oct. 23, 30, Nov. 6; special youth hunt, Oct. 3. One deer of either sex may be taken and the kill will not be counted against the regular state bag limit. Applications may be obtained by writing to Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge, Route 2, Box 225, Rock Hall, MD 21661 or by calling the office at 410-639-7056, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

* Two area sailors have been awarded the US Sailing Rescue Medal for actions that saved lives recently. Alex Delcastillo of Annapolis was cited for rescuing skipper John Ahrens of Annapolis, who went overboard during the recent Newport to Bermuda Race. Capt. Chad Doherty of Annapolis was cited for saving two sailors who fell overboard from their 30-footer in the Magothy River in April.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Sunday: Buck Fever, The Hunting Show at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship. Featured speaker is scheduled to be Dan Fitzgerald, acknowledged expert of white tail deer. Also, the Maryland trophy deer contest, bow hunters' contest, seminars and dealer displays.
