ROCKVILLE -- Jane Fitzgerald, a medalist playing her first round of match play, easily advanced to today's quarterfinals of the Maryland State Golf Association Women's Amateur Championship at Norbeck Country Club.

Fitzgerald, who is unattached, closed out Melly Tucker of Argyle, 7 and 6, and will face Stephanie Kell of Country Club of Maryland, who defeated Cindy Peterka of Sparrows Point, 2 and 1, yesterday.

The Fitzgerald-Kell quarterfinal is set for 10:06 a.m. on the par-73, 5,667-yard course. The semifinals will follow at 2. Six of eight quarterfinalists are from the Baltimore area.

"I'm playing well and the course is great," said Fitzgerald, who made the turn at 7-up. "I birdied the first hole [par-4, 339-yard], and that helped. I hit the ball well, but nothing spectacular. I feel good right now, and think I have a shot at winning this."

Fitzgerald won this tournament in 1991. Shannon Hanley of Congressional won last year at Rolling Road, but has turned professional.

Kell, who was 2-up after the front nine, said: "I almost had an eagle on the fifth hole [par-5, 437 yards], but the ball hung on the rim of the cup. I thought I played well."

The most exciting match of the day was the final one in which Sharon Pusin of Suburban defeated Cami Berher of Montgomery Village, 1-up, with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th green, a par-5, 397-yard hole.

"It was the only good putt I made all day," said Pusin. "This was the closest match I've ever played in. I didn't play great [79 for the round] but I didn't play poorly either. I just hung in there."

Bonnie Fry of Maryland Golf & Country Club stayed in the hunt by defeating Lynne Hunter of Turf Valley, 2 and 1. "I putted well and that's what carried me," said Fry. "I didn't have a sparkling round. I played well on the front nine and not so well on the back nine."
