LOS ANGELES -- Fox will officially launch its new fall season next month with "Cops" and the live premiere of "Roc," it was announced yesterday.

Fox Entertainment President Peter Chernin said the early start of several Fox shows will help the network avoid the "clutter" when more than two dozen new shows debut on the other three networks in September.

"Cops" will start its new season Aug. 15, followed by "Roc" Aug. 16. This episode will be the first of a full season of 22 live broadcasts from the Hollywood Center Studios of "Roc," the sitcom about a Baltimore garbage man, starring Baltimore's Charles Dutton. There has not been a weekly, prime-time series broadcast live since the late 1950s.

By the end of August, Chernin said, Fox will have 11 of its 21 regular series back on the air for the new season. Most of the new and returning series from the traditional networks will not start their season until mid-September. The early start-up dates for Fox have been extremely successful in launching new shows.
