* Four Carroll County men recently returned aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, homeported in Norfolk, Va., following a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean, Red Sea and Persian Gulf.

The men are Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class John D. McElroy, Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Joseph L. Kahney and Navy Airman Apprentices George H. Tutor and Aaron S. Bennett.

They participated in operations and training exercises as the USS America led its 12-ship battle group. The carrier and its escorts conducted exercises with NATO allies in the Mediterranean and with the Egyptian Air Force in the Red Sea. Once in the Gulf, more training was performed with the armed forces of Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

The return of the USS America to the gulf earned it the distinction of becoming the first gulf war veteran ship to redeploy to the region in the postwar period.

The ship also visited several foreign ports, including Palma De Majorca, Spain; Naples, Italy; Souda Bay, Crete; Athens, Greece; Antalya, Turkey; Haifa, Israel; and Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Petty Officer McElroy is the son of Helen M. and James C. McElroy Sr. of Sykesville. A 1985 Liberty High School graduate, he joined the Navy in December 1987.

Petty Officer Kahney is the son of Joseph E. and Joan H. Kahney of Manchester. He is a 1986 graduate of North Carroll High School who joined the Navy in March 1988.

The son of Nancy M. Tutor of Westminster, Apprentice Tutor graduated from North Carroll High School in 1988. He joined the Navy in July 1990.

Apprentice Bennett, the son of Steven J. and Dorthea L. Bennett of Mount Airy, is a 1988 graduate of Linganore High School, Frederick County. He joined the Navy in August 1990.

* Navy Seaman Recruit Bryan C. Waldt, son of Roy M. and Rebecca M. Waldt of Mount Airy, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the cycle, recruits are taught general military subjects designed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 occupational fields. He is a 1991 South Carroll High graduate.
