Using past practice as a guide, Baltimore Gas and Electric Co.'s board of directors is expected to name its new chairman and chief executive officer today, and the favored candidate is Christian H. Poindexter, 53, the vice chairman of the utility company.

George V. McGowan, the current chairman and chief executive, announced at the company's annual meeting April 15 that he would be retiring at the end of the year. His appointment to the position was announced July 17, 1987, five months before he assumed the position at the beginning of 1988.

Similarly, the board announced at its June 1979 board meeting that Bernard C. Trueschler would take the company's helm on Jan. 1, 1980.

BG&E spokesman Arthur J. Slusark confirmed that the company's board of directors was scheduled to meet today, as it does the third Friday of each month.

Since Mr. McGowan's April announcement, Mr. Poindexter has been seen as the most likely person to take the top position. He has been vice chairman of the board since 1989 and before that he was president and chief executive officer of Constellation Holdings Inc., BG&E's non-regulated subsidiary.

Mr. Poindexter joined BG&E in 1967 after seven years in the U.S. Navy. He holds a master's degree in business administration in finance from Loyola College and a bachelor's degree in engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy.
