Chamber awards $500 trade scholarship

The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce recently awarded its $500 Vocational Trade Scholarship to Michael Deschenes. Mr. Deschenes has participated in a pre-engineering technology class and will major in pre-engineering at Anne Arundel Community College. As a high school student, he was a math tutor, drama aide, assistant scoutmaster and member of the All-County Orchestra. He studied computer programming in the AACC evening program and is considering the military for educational opportunities.

The Chapelgate Community Association is sponsoring several events. From noon until 5 p.m. Aug. 15, the association will have a community picnic and fun day at the Greater Odenton Recreation Council (GORC) Park. Admission is free, but participants should bring food and drinks. A refreshment stand will be open and grills are available in the picnic area. The association will raffle two tickets to Wild World for those over 18 and a prize for children.

GORC members will provide games, including a moon bounce for kids. Proceeds from the food, games and the ride will be used to buy uniforms and equipment for GORC programs. Anyone who wishes to arrange activities for adults or older teens is asked to call 674-4810 or 674-4794.

The association also will have a yard and baked goods sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 12 in the Odenton Elementary School parking lot. Space rentals are $8. To reserve a space, call 674-4810.

An Atlantic City bus trip is scheduled for Sept. 14. The cost is $18 per person. The bus will depart from the Odenton Shopping Center at 6 p.m. and return at 6 a.m. Sept. 15. Reservations must be made by July 30.

Special skating sessions will be at the Piney Orchard Ice Arena from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. through Friday. Children who bring report cards showing all B's or A's will receive $1 off admission. Regular summer sessions are 8 to 10 p.m. Fridays, 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays and 2 to 4 and 8 to 10 p.m. Saturdays.

Family skating sessions are scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturdays. Children accompanied by skating adults receive $1 off the admission price.

Summer group lessons will be offered for five Saturdays, beginning July 25. Thirty-minute lessons are available for beginning through advanced skaters, ages 6 to adults. Fees are $35, which includes free admission to six public sessions. Class sizes are limited and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration is required.

The delightful and entertaining Ronnie and Stan will provide "Our Kind Of Music" for listening and dancing at the O'Malley Senior Center's July Birthday Party. Music lovers can enjoy the group from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 30.

These regularly scheduled parties, including lunchtime entertainment, give special recognition to those seniors who celebrate birthdays during the month. Members and non-members are invited. Reservations for the catered luncheon must be made by Monday. There is no fee, but donations will be collected at serving time.

Financial adviser Roger Thusius will present a one-day seminar on "Understanding Mutual Funds" from 1 to 2:30 p.m. July 24. Mr. Thusius will describe mutual funds are and how they can be used to increase personal income. The seminar is free, but registration is required.
