Moore wins women's 5K

Friday night in Columbia, a record field of over 400 women assembled for the midnight start of the Women's Distance Festival 5K road race conducted by the Howard County Striders.

Less than 18 minutes later, Donna Moore crossed the finish line to the cheers of spectators to win in an impressive time of 17:36. Moore, unaffected by the heat, took the lead at 1.5 miles and finished 13 seconds ahead of Louise Kelly.

Last year's winner, Cathy Stanmeyer, was a close third in 17:53. Area favorites Geriann Bell and Vicki Lang were the first Howard finishers, and Linda Lash was first in the Masters division.

An estimated 85 women competed in their first race Friday nightmany of whom participated in the Striders'-sponsored Females in Training (FIT) Program, an eight-week session conducted by the Striders' Women's Committee to encourage novice runners.

The newcomers met weekly to build up their endurance, with a goal of finishing Friday's race.
