Mike Mussina, 23, is serving his first full year as a pitcher for the Orioles, and has established himself in baseball with an earned run average that is fourth best in the league. In his spare time on the road or at the park, he enjoys reading Stephen King novels and says his goal is to complete all of Mr. King's works before his contract goes to arbitration. He is also a fan of rock and heavy metal music, and names Guns N Roses as a favorite band. Mr. Mussina is a graduate of StanfordUniversity, where he earned a degree in economics.

How would you describe your taste in clothing?

My style is whatever you would call jeans and T-shirts and shorts. Real casual.

What's the newest thing in your closet?

A two-week-old pair of Nike sneakers that are still in the box. I like my sneakers to look new; that's basically my fetish. When they get beat up a little bit they get shoved into the back in the "jogging, play tennis, play golf" category.

Do you have a true standby that you wear to feel good?

I have a favorite pair of shorts. They're Nike basketball shorts about knee-long. They're maroon and black and they're big. That's what I like about them -- they're big.

What have you kept for sentimental reasons?

I just got out of college, so I think there is more pride in my college clothing than sentiment. I swear I don't have anything sentimental. What a life -- no sentimentality.

Do you have lucky clothing that you wear for games?

I wear the same shirt to pitch in every game. It's a plain gray T-shirt that I wore for three years in college and continue wearing as a professional pitcher. I figure if it's not broken don't fix it. Hopefully, by the time it wears out, I'll be emotionally stable enough to handle it.

What is your wardrobe weakness?

I can't resist Herman's Sporting Goods or the Foot Locker. I like nice clothes and we have to dress nice on the road, but my weakness would have to be sneakers. I like Nike because they make good shoes, have a wide variety and I'm under contract [He has signed a one-year, exclusive, paid contract with Nike].

What's the most expensive item in your closet?

It's a gray Hugo Boss suit that I got last September. It is double-breasted and has cuffs -- you have to have cuffs now. It was retailed at $800 but I got it at an outlet store for $500.

What's the wildest outfit you ever bought?

It was a gift, but in sixth grade I wore a green -- all green -- sweat suit, the fleece kind with the pockets and the hood and the drawstring. I wore it once and I remember getting buried a few times by the kids at school. I said "that is it!" and I didn't wear it again. I cut the sweat pants off, though, and I still wear those.

What are your favorite accessories?

I wear baseball hats all the time. I wear college hats from different colleges, not my college because I'd get razzed around here. I probably have about 20 hats here and, including what I have in my closet at home [in Montoursville, Pa.], I have about 40 or 50 hats. My favorite is a black one with a white patch that says "This Week in Baseball" that I got in spring training.

What's your favorite uniform that you ever wore?

My Montoursville High School baseball uniform. It was white with blue lettering that said "Warriors."
