Westminster's Chuck Taylor won the Class I race at 75-80 Dragway in Monrovia, Frederick County, last weekend.

Taylor advanced through seven rounds in his Ford Pinto in the July 4 competition. In the finals, Taylor won with an estimated dial in of 10.8 seconds and an elapsed time of 10.81 in the quarter-mile. Taylor is in the top 16 drivers in his class and will represent 75-80 at the Bracket Finals at Maple Grove Speedway in Reading, Pa., in September.

Tom Humm of Taneytown won the July 4 Class II event in his Ford Falcon and Rick Waxter of Westminster was runner-up in his Plymouth Baracuda.

Sherry Will of Westminster won the powder puff race in her pickup truck and Bruce Combs of Westminster won the 10.90 Race in the Peters and Combs Vega.

In Class I, Erv Hare (Westminster) and Tom Higgs (Sykesville) were quarterfinalists.

Dave Belt of Taneytown was a runner-up in the motorcycles and Norman Wagner of Hampstead was a semifinalist.

In other motor sports action:

* George Hoff of Westminster and Woody Etzler of Mount Airy were second-round winners in the super ET class at Mason-Dixon Dragway in Hagerstown on July 5.

Cory Hess of Taneytown was a fourth-round winner in the heavy ET contest

* Hampstead resident Charlie Schaffer fought his way through a crowed pack from the rear to take second place in the 40-lap Lee Stultz Memorial late-model feature at Winchester Speedway in Virginia on July 4.

Schaffer had started in 14th place and found himself in the rear early after stopping on the second turn. Undaunted, Schaffer pressed until he got pass Doug Burkholder on lap 35.

Schaffer didn't have an easy go last Sunday at Budds Creek Speedway in Charles County, either. Shaffer was in a heated contest with five drivers in the late-model feature and eventually took third.

* Brad McClelland took second and defending track champion Mike Stull was fourth at the Hardee's Firecracker Shoot-Out 30-lap feature July 1. Both Westminster residents won their respective heats in the micro-sprint competition.

Greg Messersmith and Gary Herman, both of Hampstead, took third and fourth respectively in the eight-cylinder stock action, while Brad Green of Westminster was third in the four-cylinder stock feature.

* Cris Eash, formerly of Woodbine and now residing in Hanover, Pa., set a new course one-lap record at Selinsgrove Speedway on July 6. With the time of 17.29, Eash bettered Mark Kinser's 1991 record of 17.43. Eash finished the sprint car feature at Selinsgrove in third place.

Third seemed to be in the cards for Eash for the week, as he was third in Susquehanna Speedway's 30-lap feature for super sprint last Sunday. Also at Susquehanna, Westminster's Keith Walsh was seventh in the 12-lap thunder car feature.

Walsh was third on July 4 at Lincoln Speedway's thunder car feature and Eash was eighth in the sprint cars feature that night.

Eash is sixth in the points standing at Lincoln with 285.

* Gary Stuhler, of Westminster, won the heat race at Hagerstown Speedway for the super stock late model, and led in the opening of the 35-lap feature, only to finished 17th on the night.
