Chicago Cubs -- Traded P Danny Jackson to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 3B Steve Buechele.

Chicago White Sox -- Acquired IF Eric Yelding as the player to be named to complete the trade made July 4 with the Houston Astros for P Rich Scheid.

Florida Marlins -- Released 1B Rusty Bumgardner.

Houston Astros -- Suspended P Mark Portugal for one game for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Hawaiian Winter League -- Canceled its inaugural season because of problems with stadiums and other logistics. The league was set to begin a 54-game season in October with four teams, using players from minor leagues and some professionals from Japan.

U.S. Olympic team -- Cut Florida State P Tim Davis, Texas A&M P Jeff Granger, Florida P Marc Valdes, Pepperdine 2B Steve Rodriguez and Georgia Tech C Jason Varitek.

Basketball

FIBA -- Took the 1994 world championship away from strife-torn Yugoslavia. It will accept bids for a replacement site until Oct. 1.

Atlanta Hawks -- Signed F Adam Keefe, first-round draft choice from Stanford, to a five-year contract.

Chicago Bulls -- Placed G Craig Hodges (three straight NBA three-point shooting contest victories) on waivers.

Hamilton Skyhawks (WBL) -- Activated former Washington Bullets G Larry Robinson from the injured reserve. Released

former Coppin State G Reggie Isaac.

Football

Houston Oilers -- Signed OT Bernard Dafney and DE George Bethune. Waived WR Jon Reed and LB Anthony Williams. DE Sean Jones (10 1/2 sacks) announced his retirement, but coach Jack Pardee called it a bargaining ploy.

Los Angeles Raiders -- Signed PK Mike Attardi.

Miami Dolphins -- Signed WR Walter Wilson. Agreed to terms with DE Larry Webster (third-round pick from Maryland), LB Dwight Hollier, LB Roosevelt Collins, LB Andre Powell, CB Tony Tellington, FB Raoul Spears, WR Lee Milers, TE Milton Biggins and RB Kameno Bell. Waived QB Chris Gray and NT Horacio Moronta.

New York Giants -- Announced that QB Phil Simms has agreed in principle on a new contract.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Agreed to terms with former University of Miami QB Craig Erickson, a fifth-round pick of Philadelphia in 1991 who did not sign with the Eagles. Signed NT Mark Wheeler.

Gymnastics

U.S. Gymnastics Federation -- Named Betty Okino, Michelle Campi, Kim Zmeskal, Shannon Miller, Kerri Strug, Dominique Dawes and Wendy Bruce to Olympic team. Named Bela Karolyi women's coach. Named Karolyi's wife, Martha, and Steve Nunno assistants.

MSL -- Announced it will discontinue operations effective

immediately.
