Man jailed for punching daughter's teacher

July 10, 1992

The father of a Woodlawn Senior High School student was convicted this week in Baltimore County Circuit Court of assault for punching his daughter's science teacher.

Vernon F. Lee, 56, of the 6400 block of Clifton Forge Circle, was sentenced to one year in the Baltimore County Detention Center with all but 30 days suspended. Judge Barbara K. Howe also fined him $1,400 plus court costs and ordered him to write a letter of apology to the teacher, Thomas S. DeGraziano.

The assault charge stemmed from a March 19 confrontation at the school between the Lees and Mr. DeGraziano, and the school's principal and vice principal, said Steve Kroll, an assistant state's attorney.

The Lees were upset that Mr. DeGraziano, the head of Woodlawn's science department, ordered their daughter out of the honors science class for being 10 minutes late without an excuse. During a later discussion, Mr. Lee punched the teacher, said Mr. Kroll.

Mr. Lee represented himself during the one-day trial.
