Baseball Orioles -- Placed P Storm Davis (groin injury) on the 15-day DL. Recalled P Arthur Rhodes from Triple-A Rochester. Announced that P John O'Donoghue was promoted from Double-A Hagerstown to Triple-A Rochester.

Chicago Cubs -- Purchased the contract of IF Jeff Kunkel from Triple-A Iowa. Optioned C Hector Villanueva.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Traded IF Jeff Kunkel to the Chicago Cubs for OF Ced Landrum and assigned Landrum to Triple-A Denver.

New York Yankees -- Placed IF Mike Gallego on the 15-day DL. Recalled OF Mike Humphreys from Triple-A Columbus. Recalled C John Ramos from Columbus and placed him on the 60-day DL.

Oakland Athletes -- Placed LF Rickey Henderson on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 30. Called up Eric Fox from Double-A Huntsville.

Texas Rangers -- Announced the resignation of Ted Guthrie, GM of the Charlotte Rangers of the Single-A Florida State League. Named Tim Murphy Charlotte's acting GM.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Place 3B Kelly Gruber on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 28. Called up 3B Tom Quinlan from Triple-A Syracuse.

Northwest League -- Awarded inaugural franchises to Duluth, Minn.; St. Paul, Minnesota; Fargo, N.D.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Thunder Bay, Ontario. The teams will be unaffiliated and made up of college seniors and released minor- and major-leaguers.

Los Angeles Lakers -- Signed G Duane Cooper.

New Jersey Nets -- Announced the retirement of head trainer Fritz Massmann. Promoted Ted Arzonico from assistant trainer to head trainer.

Copper Bowl -- Announced that it will be known as the Weiser Lock Copper Bowl in 1992 and 1993, with an option for 1994.

Brown -- Named former major-leaguer Bill Almon baseball coach.

Central Florida -- Announced the resignation of Bret Campbell, assistant basketball coach, to accept a similar position at Austin Peay.

Coppin State -- Named Nate Blackwell (Temple's all-time leader in games and second in assists) assistant basketball coach.

Indiana State -- Announced QB Tom Cerasani has transferred from Wisconsin.

UCLA -- Announced that Kevin Dempsey, considered one of the top prep basketball players in California during the 1990-91 season, will attend starting this fall. He enrolled at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif., last year and did not play basketball.

Western Carolina -- Named Pete Strayhorn men's assistant basketball coach.

Dallas Cowboys -- Waived S Vince Albritton.

Denver Broncos -- Released G Crawford Ker, who started 10 games last season.

Indianapolis Colts -- Waived RB Tim Manoa.

Minnesota Vikings -- Released former Pro Bowl QB Wade Wilson, who holds the club record of 7.29 yards per passing attempt.

Phoenix Cardinals -- Named Bob Ackles director of college scouting.
