Ruth C. Marriott

July 09, 1992

Ruth C. Marriott, a longtime Liberty Road resident who soldchildren's clothing well into her 80s, died Monday at Baltimore County General Hospital after a heart attack at her home.

Services for Mrs. Marriott, who was 92, were being held today at the Loring Byers Chapel, 8728 Liberty Road.

"Miss Ruth," as she was known to many neighbors and customers, lived and worked for many years in the Rockdale section of Liberty Road in Baltimore County.

In the mid-1930s, she and her husband, William Saum Marriott, operated Marriott's Confectionery and Lunch in Rockdale. The shop became known for her specialties, including peach cakes and holiday fruit cakes.

After her husband's death in 1937, she began selling children's clothing at the Herbert Shop in Northwest Baltimore. From there, she began working closer to home, at the Tot to Teen Shop in Rockdale. After 25 years with that shop, she retired in 1984 -- at age 84.

The former Ruth C. Greninger was a native of Hebbville and was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church there.

She is survived by three daughters, Ileen Rush of Towson, Ida M. Tomlinson of Greensboro, Pa., and Lucille Webster of Carroll Valley, Pa.; a son, William Saum Marriott Jr. of Reisterstown; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
