Baseball Commissioner's office -- Announced the realignment of the National League, effective next season, shifting the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds to the East Division and the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals to the West Division.

Chicago Cubs -- Announced that the Tribune Company, owners of the club, have signed a letter of intent to purchase the Orlando SunRays of the Double-A Southern League.

Kansas City Royals -- Activated SS David Howard from the DL and optioned him to Triple-A Omaha.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Recalled P Kip Gross from Triple-A Albuquerque and optioned OF Henry Rodriguez to Albuquerque. Sent Gross back to Albuquerque and activated OF Darryl Strawberry.

New York Yankees -- Announced the resignation of Barry Halper, vice president of baseball operations.

Oakland Athletics -- Recalled IF Scott Brosius from Triple-A Tacoma and sent OF Dann Howitt to Tacoma.

Seattle Mariners -- Placed IF Greg Briley on the 15-day DL. Designated P Mike Walker for assignment. Purchased the contracts of IF Shane Turner and P Brian Fisher from Triple-A Calgary.

College

Arizona State -- Named Lee Roy Smith wrestling coach.

Loyola -- Named former soccer player Dave Gerrity coach of women's soccer team, which begins play this fall.

Football

New York Jets -- Announced the retirement of K Pat Leahy.

High school National Federation of State High School Associations -- Named Douglas Chickering president for 1992-93.

Hockey

Johnstown Chiefs (East Coast Hockey League) -- Named Eddie Johnstone coach.

Washington Capitals -- Agreed to terms with D Al Iafrate on a two-year contract.
