Baseball AL -- Reduced the suspension of Kansas City Royals P Neal Heaton from five to four games.

Chicago White Sox -- Activated OF Dan Pasqua from the 15-day DL. Optioned OF Shawn Jeter to Triple-A Vancouver.

Cincinnati Reds -- Placed P Tom Browning on the 15-day DL with ligament damage in his left knee. Called up IF Jeff Branson from Triple-A Nashville for the third time this season.

Cleveland Indians -- Recalled P Jeff Mutis from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Optioned P Denis Boucher to Colorado Springs.

Toronto Blue Jays -- The team's Triple-A affiliate, the Syracuse Chiefs, signed P Scott Medvin.

Basketball

Houston Rockets -- Acquired C Greg Kite from the Orlando Magic for 1993 and 1996 second-round draft choices. Extended to F Matt Bullard, F Carl Herrera, G Avery Johnson and G David Wood qualifying contract offers. Announced that they would not extend a qualifying offer to F Buck Johnson.

Los Angeles Clippers -- Announced that C James Edwards exercised a buyout clause and became an unrestricted free agent. Renounced the rights to F LeRon Ellis, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Los Angeles Lakers -- Named Chet Kammerer and Larry Drew assistant coaches.

Minnesota Timberwolves -- Signed G-F Gundars Vetra, 6 feet 6, from the Commonwealth of Independent States, to a multiyear contract. Vetra averaged 28.6 points in 32 minutes per game in this year's European Cup.

New York Knicks -- Renounced contract rights to C James Donaldson and G Kennard Winchester. Announced that they would not extend a qualifying offer to C Patrick Eddie.

Fort Wayne Fury (CBA) -- Named Mo McHone coach.

Global Basketball Association -- Approved the sale of its Pensacola, Fla., franchise to Johnny Beck, Bill Byrd and Gerald Emil, who will move it to Biloxi, Miss.

Erie Wave (WBL) -- Acquired former Virginia G John Crotty from the Winnipeg Thunder for the rights to F Eric Brown.

Aris Salonica -- Greece team signed former Dallas Mavericks C Roy Tarpley to a two-year contract reportedly worth $1.25 million.

Colleges

NCAA -- Reprimanded Johnny Orr, Iowa State men's basketball coach, and John Chaney, Temple men's basketball coach, for criticizing the officiating during the NCAA basketball tournament. Withheld $2,000 from Temple and $5,000 from Iowa State.

Pacific-10 Conference -- Reprimanded the University of Arizona for NCAA rules violations that occurred earlier this year in the school's book-loan program for athletes.

Canisius -- Named Michael Greco lacrosse coach.

Eastern Kentucky -- Named Mike Calhoun men's basketball coach.

Massachusetts-Lowell -- Named Elizabeth A. Zielinski head athletics trainer, effective Aug. 10.

Millersville -- Named Will Lewis secondary coach and Jack Peavey line coach.

G; Regis -- Named Tom Peck men's and women's tennis coach.

Michelob Skins Classic -- Announced that Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson and Payne Stewart will compete for more than $200,000 in prize money on Aug. 17 at North Port National Golf Club in St. Louis.
