Severn Post 276 Legion baseball team won six games and the tournament title in last weekend's Hillbilly Hardball Classic in Elkton, W.Va.
Severn, which improved to 21-7, defeated teams from Washington, Ohio, Virginia and Pennsylvania by a combined score of 57-18, before taking a marathon 17-11 championship victory over Louie Lowman Post 108 of Arbutus.
Highlighting the weekend performance was 15-year-old hurler Larry Burkindine, who tossed a no-hitter in Severn's third game, a 15-0 victory over Rockwood, Pa.
Northeast graduate Craig Everett, the Anne Arundel County Sun's 1991 Player of the Year, hurled a six-strikeout, one-walk 14-5 victory over Lynchburg, Va., in the fifth game.
"We changed our pitching around a lot," said Severn coach Willie Domingez. "Everyone got a chance to play."
Shortstop K. C. Murphy (10 RBI) led Severn's hit parade with four home runs, followed by Everett and Don Shump with two homers each. Also hitting home runs were Derek Dolch, Bobby Conrad and Kenny Moore.
Severn, which played Annapolis Post 7 last night and meets Severna Park Post 175 tonight, also bounced defending league champion Mayo, 7-3, Monday.
Derek Hasslehoff (4-1) scattered seven hits with five strikeouts and no walks in the victory, his fourth over Mayo.
Hasslehoff got offensive support from Everett (3-for-4, three RBI), who had a solo home run, and Dolch (2-for-3, one RBI).
