Mixed couples sought

Supporters of term limits for County Council members told the election board Monday they have the 10,000 signatures needed to put their proposal on the ballot this fall as a referendum item.
The supporters were advised to collect an extra 2,000 signatures as a buffer before submitting their petition to help assure that enough signatures from registered voters are collected. The deadline for submitting the petition is Aug. 10.
If the petition is found valid, voters will be asked this fall to decide whether to limit council terms to 12 years. Current council members would be exempt from the term limitation if it were enacted.
Councilman Darrel Drown, R-2nd, brought a term-limit bill before the council last year, but it was rejected by a 3-2 vote that was split along party lines. Drown supporters then began a petition drive to let voters decide whether to impose term limits.
