Sturm to return to ring June 25

June 18, 1992|By Staff report

Glen Burnie super lightweight Chuck Sturm will headline the next Round One Promotions dinner/boxing show at Michael's 8th Avenue in Glen Burnie on Thursday, June 25.

Sturm (23-3-1), who hasn't fought since losing a controversial decision to Vinnie Burgese in November 1990, will meet Ohio's Tony Ruthledge in an eight-round bout. He had suffered vision problems after damaging a nerve in his right eye, but doctors and the Maryland State Athletic Commission have cleared the Old Mill High graduate to resume his ring career.

Another local fighter, Pasadena super middleweight Carson McCourry, will face Willie Hugley of Ohio in a four-round fight. In a six-round bout, super lightweight Reggie Green of Clinton will meet Dwyane Rotland of Ohio.

Two other four-rounders have been set, with welterweight Robert Taylor of Loch Raven squaring off against Robert West of Ohio, and junior middleweight Gerard Jordan of Ohio facing Tony West -- Robert's brother.

Matchmaker Josh Hall said arrangements are under way to find an opponent for middleweight Les Johnson of Rockville.

Ringside tickets are available for $35. Other seats near ringside cost $30, and boxing-only tickets will be sold for $20 beginning at 8 p.m.
