Special Olympians win medals More than 40 athletes from Carroll take part

More than 40 Carroll Special Olympians competed in the Maryland Special Olympics Summer Games last weekend at Towson State University in Baltimore County.

More than 1,200 athletes throughout the state competed in track and field, power lifting, swimming, softball, volleyball and equestrian events. Here's a look at the Carroll winners, by sponsor:

* Carroll County Education Center: Bill Moser, first in the softball throw and third in the long jump; Jeannine Taylor, third in the softball throw and fifth in the long jump; Tori Eshelman, third in the long jump and fifth in the softball throw; Marcus Taylor, fourth in the 100-meter dash; Ron Zambelli, fourth in the 100-meter -- and third in the long jump; Jennifer Doyle, first in the softball throw and third in the 100-meter dash.

* Therapeutic Recreation Council: Bryan Peeling, first in the softball throw and fifth in the 100-meter dash; Pat Cossenpino, third in the softball throw; Philip Klein, fifth in the softball throw and second in the long jump; Bruce Martz, fourth in the softball throw and fifth in the 100-meter dash; Aimee Buswell, second in the 25-meter wheelchair race and second in the 30-meter wheelchair slalom; Martha Kirkendall, second in the 50-meter -- and second in the softball throw.

* Carrolltowne Elementary: Eric Tomaszewski, second in the long jump and fourth in the 50-meter dash.

* Hampstead Elementary: Amanda Placko, fourth in the 200-meter race; Chris Shaffer, sixth in the long jump and fifth in the 50-meter dash.

* North Carroll Middle: Aaron Marders, first in the long jump and first in the 50-meter dash.

* West Middle: John Bostic, second in the long jump; Tammy Robertson, second in the softball throw; Erin Holland, fifth in the softball throw: Kelly Sullivan, first in the softball throw and first in the long jump.

* Elmer Wolfe Elementary: Matt Howard, second in the 50-meter dash and seventh in the 200-meter race.

* Robert Moton Elementary: Treavis McElroy, third in the softball throw and fifth in the 50-meter dash; Mark Dawson, third in the softball throw and fifth in the 50-meter dash; Carrie Billings, third in the softball throw and fifth in the 50-meter dash; Shannon Smith, fourth in the long jump and fourth in the 50-meter dash; Stephanie Carpegan, third in the long jump and sixth in the 50-meter dash; Mike Fields, sixth in the 50-meter dash and fourth in the softball throw; Allen Spielman, fourth in the softball throw and fifth in the 50-meter dash; Charlie Arbaugh, fourth in the long jump and fifth in the 50-meter dash ; Brad Utz, third in the soft ball throw and third in the 50-meter dash; Myra McClain, second in the long jump and third in the 50-meter dash.

* Equestrian Events: Bruce Watt, first in dressage and equitation, second in trail; Carolyn Gately, first in dressage and equitation, second in trail; Ralph Gemmill, first in team relay and equitation, third in trail; Megan Roland, first in trail, second in dressage and equitation; Adam Dunn, first in team relay, second in equitation and third in dressage; Erin Strevig, first in team relay, second in equitation and fifth in trail; Nikki Hurley, second in team relay and trail, third in equitation; Chuck Toth, second in team relay, third in equitation and fourth in trail.
