50 Years Ago (week of June 14-20, 1942):
* Howard County's scrap rubber drive was under way this week. The objective of the drive was for residents to turn in scrap rubber for recycling into products to be used in the war effort. Tires, inner tubes, rubber shoe soles, hot water bottles, gloves, raincoats, and "plumber's helpers" were all sought as contributions. Each gasoline station in the county was a designated collection point.
* Heavy rains, wind, and lightning tore through the county this week and caused substantial damage. Trees were uprooted, several farm buildings were blown down and three farm animals were killed by lightning. There were also reports throughout the county of damage from high water.
