Academy takes 7 from county

June 17, 1992

Seven Howard County students have been chosen to enter the U.S. Naval Academy this fall.

The academy appointees are: Carl Bochau, John Calvert, Greg Donofrio, and Anthony Yanero of Mount Hebron High School; Jonathan Jackson of Glenelg High School; Eugene Miller of Atholton High School; and Marguerite Morrison of Centennial High School.

To apply to the academy, students must be nominated by a member of Congress, who judges them on academic scores, community service, leadership skills and athletic ability. Applicants also must pass a medical examination and appear before a 17-member admissions board made up of Naval Academy faculty and staff members.

The four students from Mount Hebron High School are the largest group the school has ever sent to the academy, said Jane Scott, a 12-year counselor. "It's become a pipeline," Scott said of the high school.

So far more than 1,200 students have been admitted to the academy, said Naval Academy spokeswoman Karen Myers.
