THE COUNTRY GOURMET 111 S. Main Street, Bel Air Hours: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. Closed weekends. (410) 628-8806. This is where I take all my snobbish out-of-town friends who scoff at the idea of gourmet in Harford County. They quickly eat their words.

The Country Gourmet, open for about five years, has marvelous fresh food, served up in a chic, country-style setting.

Ingredients are top of the line; soups and desserts are made daily. The chilled gazpacho, $1.75 per cup, is a personal favorite, loaded with minced fresh vegetables for a fresh-from-the-garden flavor.

In addition to two or three soups each day, there are plenty of sandwiches to choose from.

The French kick is delicious. Rare top round beef is topped with horseradish, onion and Pommery mustard on a Kaiser roll for $3.50.

Or have a holy cow, your choice of two cheeses (try dilled Havarti and Monterey Jack) for $3.35. A butter croissant is an extra 35 cents.

Be sure to inquire about daily specials. Recently, spinach quiche was being served for lunch for $3.95. It comes with fresh fruit.

There is also a salad bar with crispy lettuce, bread sticks and plenty of fresh, chopped vegetables.

Desserts are made at the store. Try a walnut chocolate chip brownie or lemon shortbread bar for $1 each. Or treat yourself to a slice of raspberry nut cake or a frosted brownie for $1.25 each.

The restaurant and carry-out entices locals in by regularly sending menus by fax to area businesses and shops. Catering is available.
