The Ground Round

The Ground Round, 8810 Waltham Woods Road, (410) 668-9062. The Ground Round touts itself as a place "where kids can relax . . . and grown-ups can have fun." Few would quarrel. Children are definitely welcome; the youngsters' menu offers eight typical dishes and there's complimentary popcorn for those who can't wait another minute. The regular menu offers a big selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, burgers, chicken, steak and seafood. $ 1/2 -- moderately inexpensive (Last visited 5/92.)

American Cafe, Light Street Pavilion, Harborplace, (410) 962-8800. After all these years the American Cafe in Harborplace has changed its menu of jazzy light fare. It now has separate lunch and dinner menus. Many favorites remain, like the corn and crab soup and Baja rolls, but there are more steaks and seafood -- real dinners, in other words. The staff didn't handle the crowds as well as you might hope, but most of what we had was good, particularly the Georgetown corned beef sandwich and potato salad. $$ -- moderate. ELIZABETH LARGE American Cafe, 535 Hampton Lane, Towson, (410) 583-7401. The tea room at Hampton Mansion is historic with a capital H; but its era is the '50s, not the 18th century of the rest of the house. It offers hot entrees like crab imperial and creamed chicken on toast along with overcooked vegetables, coconut meringue pie and the like. The good news is that the setting is nothing short of quaint, and complimentary sherry and tiny homemade rolls are served with each lunch. $$ -- moderate. (Last visited 4/92.)
