* Chicago Cubs P Greg Maddux is 1-5 in his past six starts -- a span in which the club has scored just two runs for him. The Cubs were shut out in four of his five losses. By contrast, teammate Mike Morgan is 5-0 in six May starts and the team has averaged six runs a game for him.

* Los Angeles Dodgers C Mike Scioscia was hitting .174 (20-for-115) and had thrown out just eight of 44 base runners through Friday. Not exactly the best way to begin the last year of your contract.

* Philadelphia Phillies P Terry Mulholland was 5-0 in May before pitching last night, but he had better enjoy his winning streak while it lasts. He is 1-11 lifetime in June.

* Atlanta Braves RF David Justice entered the weekend just 3-for-35 with runners in scoring position.

* When Wade Boggs hit three homers against the Oakland Athletics last weekend at Fenway Park, he increased the Boston Red Sox's 1992 home run total to 17 -- same number that A's first baseman Mark McGwire had when he arrived in town.

* Boston OF Mike Greenwell doubled the other day, which would not be significant if it weren't his first extra-base hit of the season. It came in his 88th at-bat.

* Toronto Blue Jays OF Rob Ducey is the last major-league player to start the season on the roster and still not have a hit. He was 0-for-7 through Friday.

* Cleveland Indians P Dave Otto is 2-0 with an 0.75 ERA against the A's, and he is 1-3 with a 9.67 ERA against the rest of the league. The other victory, of course, was against the Orioles in the second regular-season game at Camden Yards.

* Edwin Nunez became the 20th pitcher to work for the Texas Rangers this year when he was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers. The record for pitchers used by one team in an entire season is 25, set by the 1969 Seattle Pilots.
