Vinson aboard carrier

Navy Airman Mark. W. Vinson, son of William J. Vinson of Bel Air, participated in a combined Australian and United States 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Coral Sea aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence, deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.

During a major sea battle in the Coral Sea May 4 to 9, 1942, two aircraft carriers supported by U.S. and Royal Australian task forces and U.S. Army Air Corps aircraft repelled an invasion of the Australian continent. The Battle of the Coral Sea was the first allied victory in the Pacific.

Vinson made a port visit to Sydney, Australia.

The 1988 graduate of C. Milton Wright High School joined the Navy in August 1989.

Moore returns

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class David E. Moore, son of Gilbert and Jane Moore of Forest Hill, returned aboard the ammunitions ship USS Mount Baker, home-ported in Charleston, S.C., from a six-month Persian Gulf deployment.

Moore participated in training exercises designed to enhance the mission readiness of the command. He also joined a NATO multinational task force in exercise "Teamwork '92," conducted in the North Atlantic and coastal waters of Norway.

Moore made port visits to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Spain.

The 1988 graduate of C. Milton Wright High School joined the Navy in July 1988.

Bailey graduates

Pvt. Dominic L. Bailey has graduated from the power generation equipment repairer course at Fort Belvoir, Va.

During the course, students were taught to maintain and repair electric and hydraulic control systems of mobile power generators.

Bailey is the son of Dora F. Bailey and Donald R. Bailey, both of Bel Air.

8, He is a graduate of Bel Air High School.

Miller in training

Airman James P. L. Miller recently completed the clinical training portion of the medical service specialist career field at Robert L. Thompson Strategic Hospital, Carswell Air Force Base, Fort Worth, Texas.

Students received advanced instruction in various specialties of the nursing and health care career field. The course is designed to give students as much exposure to actual patient care settings as possible.

Miller is the son of Teresa Harper and stepson of Ken Harper of Bel Air, and the son of Jerry Miller of Baltimore.

Harris finishes course

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Larry A. Harris, son of Julia and Larry Harris Sr. of Abingdon, graduated from the Advanced Hull Maintenance Technician Course.

During the course at Naval Damage Control Training Center, Philadelphia, students received detailed instruction in the procedures and equipment used to repair and maintain the outer shell, framework and other metal components of ships.

The 1991 graduate of Edgewood High School joined the Navy in November 1991.

Spicknall graduates

Army Reserve Pvt. Steven W. Spicknall has graduated from a helicopter repair course at Fort Eustis, Newport News, Va.

During the course, students learned to perform direct and general support maintenance on helicopters.

Also included were instruction in safety practices, usage of ground support equipment and special and precision tools.

Spicknall is the son of Russell and Roxanne Spicknall of Bel Air.
