Essex reaches final with 7-6 victory

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Robert Elmore scored the winning run for Essex Community College in the top of the 10th inning to help the Knights advance to the final in the National Junior College World Series last night.

Elmore came up with the big plays on offense and defense, as the Knights defeated John A. Logan College of Carterville, Ill., 7-6.

Essex will play Pima Community College of Tucson, Ariz., at 9:30 p.m. today.

Elmore was 2-for-5 and threw out Jamie Hayes at the plate in the bottom of the eighth with the score tied at 6.

Elmore led off the 10th with a double. Juan Johnson popped up to third, then Chris Lafferman doubled to left, scoring Elmore.

Reliever Dale Lahr pitched 2 1/3 innings and was credited with the win.

Essex's Mike Peters and Johnson hit bases-empty home runs in the fourth.

Ken Batten hit a two-run home run in the sixth.
