Alabama A&M -- Announced athletic director Louis Cunningham will resign June 15 to join the U.S. Olympic Committee and the group organizing the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta.

Army -- Announced that G Spencer Staggs, F Nico Harrison and C Kevin Fricka, all freshmen, are resigning from the academy. Staggs and Harrison were on the Patriot League's all-rookie team.

Bates -- Named Steven G. Johnson men's basketball coach.

Colby-Sawyer -- Named James Nestor women's lacrosse coach.

Coppin State -- Announced athletic director Ron DeSouza will resign July 3 to accept a position with the NFL as a supervisor of officials. Named Pete McNeil interim athletic director.

Franklin & Marshall -- Announced the signing of several football players, including RB/DB Chris Murn of Ellicott City, DB George Moore (John Carroll), OL Clif McClain (Broadneck), OL Warren Cho (Gilman) and SE Paul DeSantis (John Carroll).

Indiana -- Announced that basketball G Pat Graham underwent bone-graft surgery on his left foot.

UMBC -- Announced the signing of three lacrosse players: A Keith Chance (Hammond), A Chris Lloyd (C. Milton Wright) and G Steve Gorski (Northeast).

F: St. Thomas -- Named Gary Tuell men's basketball coach.

Los Angeles Rams -- Named John Becker director of player personnel. Retained Lawrence McCutcheon, Harley Sewell and Frank Trump, scouts. Named David Razzano and Jeff Beathard scouts.

Minnesota Vikings -- Released RB Herschel Walker.

New York Jets -- Announced they have made a qualifying offer to Ken O'Brien, matching his 1991 salary of $1.45 million to retain their rights to him. If the Jets don't sign O'Brien by June 15, they have the right to reduce their offer.

Hockey

Minnesota North Stars -- Signed D Tom Nemeth to a two-year contract.

Montreal Canadiens -- Announced the resignation of coach Pat Burns to become coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Soccer

America -- Mexican team signed star striker Hugo Sanchez to a two-year contract.
