Privatization of governmental services

A committee created by Baltimore County Executive Roger B. Hayden to study county government says tax dollars could be saved by selling or leasing nine properties and hiring private companies to perform several services traditionally done by government. Included are such services as snow removal, bulk trash pickup, building security, detention-center health care and operating a new drunken-driver prison.

The Evening Sun would like to know what you think. Should government be turning over such services to private firms? Do you feel use of private firms would save money for taxpayers?

To register your opinion, call SUNDIAL at 783-1800 (or 268-7736 in Anne Arundel County) through midnight Sunday. After you hear the greeting, you'll be asked to punch in a four-digit code on your touch-tone phone. Punch 4600 and you'll be connected with "It's Your Call," The Evening Sun's phone survey on topical issues.

"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically, as would be done in a scientific public opinion poll.

President's policy on Haitian refugees

Most callers to SUNDIAL, or 310 of 482 (64 percent), say foreign ships that do business with Haiti should be prohibited from entering U.S. ports. The other 172 (35 percent) say they should not be prohibited.

However, by a count of 375 out of 484, a majority (77 percent) would agree with the president's policy to exclude Haitians. Disagreeing with the policy are 109 (22 percent).
