City police today are searching for the killer or killers of two men ambushed last night as they walked together in the 3700 block of Spaulding Ave. in Pimlico.

The slayings may have been drug-related, an investigator said. There were no suspects and relatively few clues.

"Neither man knew what hit them," said Lt. Joseph Russell of the Northwestern District. Both men died almost instantly, he said.

In two other unrelated slayings, a man was found shot to death today in an East Baltimore rowhouse and an unidentified man was shot several times yesterday afternoon in the 4800 block of Palmer Ave.

The two men shot to death on Spaulding Avenue were identified as Andre Wallace, 24, of the 3600 block of Spaulding Ave., and Lamont Jones, 21, of the 3500 block of Woodland Ave.

Homicide Detective Daniel Boone said Mr. Wallace what shot twice and Mr. Jones once. Both were shot at nearly point-blank range, probably with a revolver, since no shell casings were found at the scene, police said.

Autopsies were to be performed today, said Detective Boone.

He said the victims were walking east in the direction of Mr. Wallace's house at 10:30 p.m. after apparently buying clothes at a store and also food and soft drinks from a nearby carry-out and when someone armed with a handgun walked up behind them as they crossed an alley near 3717 Spaulding Ave. and opened fire.

Both men fell to the pavement, with Mr. Wallace lying partly in the alley and Mr. Jones next to a large tree about 10 feet away. A pager lay by Mr. Jones' body.

"Since there were no signs of robbery," the detective said, "we think the men were killed in retaliation of something, possibly a drug deal."

Residents living nearby told police they heard six gunshots and then saw a man running west on Spaulding Avenue toward Cordelia Avenue.

Mr. Jones' family said he had been employed by Pep Boys store on U.S. 40 near Westview until sustaining a leg injury.

"He was hoping to return to work soon," said a family member.

In the East Baltimore slaying, the nude body of Derek Byers, 25, was found about 9 a.m. today by police after neighbors saw three men run from the victim's brick rowhouse in the 400 block of N. Robinson St.

Police said Mr. Byers was shot once in the back of the head. His body was taken to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore where an autopsy was performed.

Police said they received two calls from nearby residents -- one from a person who heard a gunshot and others from people who saw the trio run from the victim's tidy rowhouse and into a late-model Honda.

Police said they found a large safe that had been emptied and several dozen pairs of expensive athletic shoes in the basement.

In the third Pimlico slaying yesterday, police responding to a report of a shooting in the 4800 block of Palmer Ave. around 2:20 p.m. found the body of an unidentified man lying on the pavement.

Police said the man was taken by ambulance to Maryland Shock-Trauma Center, where he died a short time later of gunshot wounds to the head and body.

Police said they knew of no motive for the slaying and had no suspects.
