Should the County Council have approved a tax increase to benefit local schools?

May 27, 1992

* Harold Smith, 50, of Columbia, employee at Fort Meade:

No. We're throwing money at the schools and we're not getting back anything for it. I don't think teachers are underpaid at all. They were petty in the dispute with [County Executive] Ecker over salary. They couldn't care less about economic conditions. They wanted the increase no matter what. . . . I don't think we're getting our money's worth for the taxes we're [paying].
