Judging a suit by its cover

In recent summers, it has taken a real search to find a bathing suit that wasn't on the scanty side. Even maillots have been cut high on the sides. Now the tide has turned. To be covered up is cool.

The emphasis is on classic patterns and fabrics -- though the latter are almost always laced with stretch fibers for a good fit. J. Crew's demure version of a Brigitte Bardot-style gingham-check maillot is made of cotton and Lycra. It costs $64.
