Regional market explained

A county planning official will explain just who makes up the Anne Arundel regional market at the May meeting of the Annapolis Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America at noon May 28 at Harry Brown's in Annapolis.

Sandy Speer, the featured speaker, heads the information services section of the county Office of Planning and Zoning.

He will speak on "Who Lives in Anne Arundel County: The Anne Arundel Regional Market."

Starting a businesss

Service Corp of Retired Executives/Active Corps of Executives (SCORE/ACE) will sponsor a one-day workshop entitled "Starting Your Own Business" from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 28 at the Conte Building, 116 Defense Highway, Annapolis.

The workshop, co-sponsored by the Greater Annapolis Chamber Commerce, is designed for people interested in a new business or who have recently started one. Topics will include start-up, management and operation of a small business.

High Technology meeting

The Anne Arundel County High Technology Council will have its monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. today at the Conte Building, Defense Highway, Annapolis.

Speakers will include Walter Poasela of the Montgomery High Tech Council and O. J. Phillips of Federal Small Business Office. Other presentations will be made by representatives of the OXKO Corp. and the Anne Arundel Trade Council.

Strategies for business

The Small Business Development Center, Entrepreneur's vTC Exchange and the Service Corp. of Retired Executives are sponsoring a seminar to address business issues vital to home-based businesses from 8 a.m. to noon June 1 at the Conte Building, Defense Highway, Annapolis.

The seminar, "Effective Benefit Strategies for Businesses" will teach techniques to maximize the value of money spent on insurance and benefits. Teaching one-person businesses how to design programs and control rising health care costs is another objective.

High sales

In the past two months, Annapolis-based Manis & Wright Realty residential sales record has tripled in number of units it settled and quadrupled its gross sales compared with March and April of 1991.

Harbour School fund

Dr. Linda Jacobs, director of the Harbour School in Annapolis, recently announced the formation of the Relocation and Development Fund Program.

Due to tremendous growth in the student population, the Harbour School is striving to relocate to a larger facility and to increase the educational resources available in the classroom.

The Harbour School provides an academic setting where learning disabled and multi-handicapped children are free to learn in a limited-risk environment that is individualized to each child's needs.

Meter readers study

Bowne Distinct, Ltd. of Columbia, Md., and Mineola, N.Y., a consulting company that specializes in solving routing and scheduling problems, has recently undertaken a pilot study of the route structure of the meter readers for the Baltimore Gas & Electric Co.

Using its RouteSmart computer program, Bowne Distinct will generate new routes and optimal travel sequence for a selected operating territory in the vicinity of Howard County and Anne Arundel County.
