COLLEGE PARK -- Baltimore area tennis players enjoyed a banner weekend during the state tennis championships at the University of Maryland.

Phil White and Matt Pharr of Old Mill won the boys doubles, defeating Matt Brown and Ramen Soltani of Winston Churchill, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). It's the second straight state title for White, who teamed with Brent Layman to win the championship last season.

In the mixed doubles title match, Severna Park's unseeded Erica Fulton and Ben Rawitt defeated Perry Hall's first-seeded team of Jen Goodwin and Scott Lortz, 6-1, 6-4.

Pikesville's second-seeded Elyse Kaplan and Dori Feldman placed second in girls doubles, losing to Walt Whitman's Liz Henkin and Lauren Martin, 1-6, 3-6.

In girls singles play, Middletown senior Bresha Byrd, seeded second in the state, bulldozed her way through the tourney's opening rounds en route to a 6-0, 6-0 final-round win over Wilde Lake's Tracy Stephan. Byrd, a hard-hitting right-hander, lost just

one game during four, two-set wins.
