Leukemia tourney features area's best

Some of the best male and female lacrosse players in Maryland will display their talents for charity in tonight's 11th annual Lacrosse For Leukemia tournament at Johns Hopkins University's Homewood Field.

Tickets are available at the gate for $6, with all proceeds going in support of researchers at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Additional money raised at the event will go to a fund to assist leukemia patients with medication and transportation.

"It's a great way to top off the prep lacrosse season," said John Stewart, who conceived the idea and organized the first Lacrosse for Leukemiatournament in 1982.

One hundred seniors -- 52 boys and 48 girls -- from public and privates schools will compete in two games, beginning with the girls exhibition at 6 p.m.

The boys game follows at 8 p.m., with players from the Maryland Scholastic Association facing off against seniors from Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties.

The MSA all-stars have defeated the Metro all-stars every year. The boys game should be high scoring with such standouts as St. Paul's Tim Whiteley (37 goals, 45 assists) and Severn's Jason Wade (42, 31).

The Metro all-stars boasts Dulaney's Brad Berzins (42, 36) and

Towson goalie Lance Buckley, whose 13 saves on Wednesday helped the Generals edge Mount Hebron, 8-7, for the Class 2A/1A state title.

The girls game will pair players from the Association of Independent Schools with girls from the five metro counties in a battle of East vs. West.
