Baseball California Angels -- Announced that John Wathan will be interim manager while Buck Rodgers recovers from injuries suffered in a bus accident yesterday. First-base coach Bobby Knoop will move to the third-base box. Bullpen coach Ken Macha will coach first. Chuck Hernandez, the roving minor-league pitching instructor, will replace Macha in the bullpen. IF Bobby Rose (badly sprained ankle) will be placed on the DL and replaced on the roster by 2B Luis Sojo.

Chicago Cubs -- Sent IF Alex Arias to Triple-A Iowa. Activated IF Rey Sanchez from the 15-day DL.

San Francisco Giants -- Activated 2B Robbie Thompson from the 15-day DL. Optioned C Craig Colbert to Triple-A Phoenix. Announced that 2B John Patterson will come off the DL today and be optioned to Phoenix.

Charlotte Hornets -- Announced the resignation of executive VP Tony Renaud.

=1 Detroit Pistons -- Named Ron Rothstein coach.

John Carroll -- Named Mike Moran men's basketball coach.

Massachusetts-Lowell -- Named Gary Manchel men's basketball coach.

New Mexico -- Gave three-year extension to men's basketball coach Dave Bliss, whose teams have won 20 or more games each of the past four seasons.

Old Dominion -- Signed wrestler Gene Curran Jr. (Archbishop Curley) to a national letter of intent.

Southwestern Louisiana -- Signed Marty Fletcher, men's basketball coach, to a three-year contract extension.

Tennessee -- Defensive coordinator Larry Lacewell resigned to become director of player personnel for the Dallas Cowboys.

Hockey

Atlanta Knights (ECHL) -- Named Gene Ubriaco coach.

Horse racing Churchill Downs -- Announced the resignation of Warner L. Jones, chairman of the board.
