SILVER SPRING -- Mark Spolarich of Crofton Country Club, unhappy after failing to qualify for the sectional level of the U.S. Open on Monday, bounced back yesterday with a par-matching 70 at Indian Spring CC and a berth in next week's Kemper Open.

With four places available in a qualifying round open to Middle Atlantic PGA members, Spolarich shot 35-35 over the 6,900-yard, par 34-36 Chief Course to lead a field of 76.

The other qualifiers were Ron Terry, one-time Havre de Grace resident and pro at Edgewood Arsenal, 34-37--71; Sam Stein, Richmond, 35-36--71; and Rob Ferguson, an assistant professional at Washington Golf & CC, 34-38--72. It will be the first Kemper for all but Terry.

Ferguson parred the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to claim the last spot, relegating Jim Bowling (35-37--72), an assistant pro at Hidden Creek, to first alternate.

An open qualifier will be held today, with 192 players chasing the last four places in the Kemper field.

Spolarich had three birdies and three bogeys in a round where his 32 putts might have been among the lowest on the slippery and undulating greens. "I played the back first, made sure my 35 was posted, but did not look at the scoreboard," he said.

On Monday, Spolarich had only two scorers ahead of him after a 69 in the local Open qualifying at Chartwell CC, then had 74 in the afternoon to miss the playoff for the last two spots by a stroke.

An assistant pro at Crofton, Spolarich admitted he had been tired and sore after Monday's 36-hole ordeal, but he came out ready yesterday. "I was solid tee to green and didn't make any mistakes," he said.

NOTES: Mark Holyfield had the best front nine among the starters on that side, 34, then shot 39 on the back and ended up winning an alternate's spot on the sixth extra hole of a playoff.
